Why Turn Signals Don’t Work With Headlights On

In older vehicles, the turn signals don’t work when you’re driving with your headlights on, and you may be confused about why this happens. Don’t worry — the problem has a simple solution and doesn’t require replacing any parts. Here are some tips to get your turn signals working again with your headlights on!

12-volt Signal

The reason the turn signals quit working when the lights are on, is that a 12-volt signal is now being sent down the opposite wire, which was acting as a ground before. Once the lights are turned off, everything will work fine again. The right brake light and turn signal not working can be a result of old wiring that needs to be replaced or because of new wires being connected wrong. First step would be to check all connections in both of the lighting circuits and make sure they’re correct. If that doesn’t fix it, replacing the wires may fix the problem. Another possible cause could be corrosion at the connection point between the two lamps. To repair this, clean the connection point with a wire brush and apply some anti-corrosion spray or dielectric grease to protect against future corrosion.

Ground Wire

If you’ve ever wondered why turn signals don’t work with headlights on, it’s because the turn signal wire is sending a 12-volt signal down a wire that used to be grounded before. This happens because when the lights are on, there’s much more current in them than the voltage for low-power accessories. When the headlights are turned off, everything works as usual. The right brake light and turn signal not working? It sounds like one of the bulbs may have burnt out. Try swapping front and rear bulbs to see if they still work correctly. A burnt bulb can cause this issue. And remember, if your car doesn’t have an indicator or left turn signal, then you will also need to replace the front (right) bulb first in order for the other side to work correctly too.

Lights Off

If your turn signals don’t work with headlights on, the problem is most likely due to a ground wire that’s been crossed. This may seem confusing but it’s actually very simple and can be fixed in just a few minutes. You’ll just need to find the right wires and then cross them over so they’re back in their original positions. Start by turning off all of the vehicle’s lights and then check the reverse light wire under the dash. If it’s black, you’ll need to inspect the red wire with the green stripe running next to it for any signs of damage or wear, which would indicate that there has been a short circuit. If both the front and rear brake lights are not working while your front turn signal works, this means that one of the two circuits going to the front brakes needs replacing. If both rear brake lights are not working while your front turn signal works, this means that one of the two circuits going to the rear brakes needs replacing.

Turn Signals Not Working When Headlights Are On

Don’t worry, this is an easy fix! The reason the turn signals quit working when the lights are on, is that a 12-volt signal is now being sent down the opposite wire, which was acting as a ground before. Once the lights are turned off, everything will work fine again. If your right brake light and turn signal are not working, the front turn signal works but the rear does not, check for burnt wires in the headlights or brake lights by turning them on and looking for smoke or melted wires. You may also have a bad switch or wire harness that needs to be replaced. If you want to replace the light bulbs in your front brake lights, just be sure to buy LEDs (right brake light and turn signal not working) or halogens (front turn signal works but rear does not). LED bulbs do not generate heat like regular incandescent bulbs and last up to 50 times longer. Halogen bulbs give you a better color of light than LEDs but they produce more heat, so they won’t last as long either. When replacing the bulb, always make sure it is oriented correctly with the filament running from front to back.

How Do I Switch From Incandescent Bulbs To LED?

Front turn signal works but the rear does not. The front bulbs are incandescent, while the rear ones are LED. We found a website that sells LED bulbs for headlights and taillights that is specific to our cars make and model. These look like they will fit right into the existing bulb sockets, too.

It may take up to four hours of driving on the freeway before all of the lights work properly with all the signals on because it will reset the brain of all of the modules in your car related to this problem once you start driving again. Until then, use caution as your car won’t have enough information about which signals should be working or not at any given time.
